My research follows interests in landscape, the coast, and modes of writing. I am developing work on a number of research projects: the practice of architecture writing / spatial writing, through the writing of narrative fiction and creative non-fiction in specific physical contexts; an exploration of the writing of landscape in particular contemporary Irish literature; a multi-disciplinary exploration into twentieth-century representations of landscape and Irishness; and a visual and textual study of the Irish seaside resort through contemporary student photography paralleled with eighteenth to twentieth century travel writing and nascent tourist literature.

2008    Graduated from University College Cork on 10 Dec 2008 with a PhD entitled Territory and Process: an exploration of the wholeness of spatial experience at the meeting of land and sea undertaken at the Department of Geography under the supervision of Dr. Denis Linehan and Prof. Robert Devoy of the Department of Geography. I was editor of building material, the bi-annual journal of the Architectural Association of Ireland. I was editor for 3 issues of this journal which considers critical issues of architectural theory and practice in Ireland. For past issues see http://architecturalassociation.ie

 

 

Architectural practice:

June 2000 – Aug 2002

Architect with Grafton Architects, Dublin. I was part of the design team for the winning entry to the invited international competition for the Università Luigi Bocconi in Milan which won the World Building of the Year 2008 at the World Architecture Festival, Barcelona. I worked as project architect for Loreto Community School in Milford, Co. Donegal and as site architect for an office building on Little Strand Street, Dublin.

Teaching Awards:

2011                I was shortlisted for the Shannon Consortium Regional Award for

Excellence in Higher Education Teaching, 2011.

 

 

Selected Research Awards:

2003 – 2006    Three-year Postgraduate Scholarship from the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) €12,700 x 3 = €38,000.

 

2006                Ireland Canada University Foundation Award (ICUF) of €5000 to explore

the changing nature of cultural, spatial and environmental relationships along Ireland’s west coast and Eastern maritime Canada, as part of the North Atlantic Rim Project, a research collaboration between four schools of architecture in Ireland, Canada, Norway & Iceland.

 

2004 -2005      Professional Training and Development Award of €2415 from The Arts

Council of Ireland to attend a series of three ‘Writing Architecture’ workshops held by AKAD in Stockholm, Sweden.
