On Tuesday 04.10.16 at 1PM – into our midst at SAUL comes Lesley Lokko – Lesley is an architect, academic and the author of ten best-selling novels. She is currently Associate Professor and Head of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She completed her architectural training at the Bartlett School of Architecture in 1994, and gained her PhD from the University of London in 2007. She is editor-in-chief of Folio, and an editorial board member of Architecture Research Quarterly, University of Cambridge. She publishes widely on topics of race, identity, diaspora and the fluid and unpredictable nature of African space

Lesley’s talk; A Risky Business  
It’s a strange, unsettling and yet exhilarating time to be in architectural education, especially in South Africa. Globally, the talk is of change, risk, opportunity and shift. Here, in contrast, students are up in arms. They throw s**t at statues, they set buildings and cars alight and they’ve successfully brought the Minister of Education to his (metaphorical) knees. #FeesMustFall began life as #RhodesMustFall, the campaign to topple the Cecil Rhodes statue outside the university of Cape Town. He did fall, and fairly promptly, too. But that was only the beginning.
