Irish artist, Anne Tallentire and Senior Lecturer at the University of Limerick School of Architecture, Grainne Hassett, will lead a seminar based on their collaborative research for Shelter, a major new work by Anne Tallentire considering the architectural legacy of the Nissen Hut co-commissioned by the Nerve Centre in Derry~Londonderry and 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.

Shelter explores material and conceptual relationships between the historic Nissen Hut, invented for the mass mobilisation of troops stationed across Europe 100 years ago and how the contemporary modes of ’emergency architecture’ respond to the humanitarian crisis the ‘mass movement of peoples’ today.

Anne Tallentire works a range of media including video, photography, drawing, assemblage text and performance. Her practice refigures and re-orders materials associated with the everyday to explore issues such as displacement, built environments and the conditions of daily life.

In August 2015 Grainne Hassett founded The Calais Builds project and has designed, organised or built some of the major community infrastructure of the Calais refugee camp known as ‘The Jungle’.
