I direct and deliver Environmental Systems and Forces Modules 1-5 within the School of Architecture, University of Limerick. This 3-year undergraduate programme incorporates a wide range of environmental and sustainable design intelligence, from climate, geography and emergence/ evolution of human technology to energy-efficient building construction techniques, human comfort and wellbeing. The potential for environmental considerations to inflect new models of integrated and sustainable design are strategically developed through design studio projects.

Graham has led two research projects of building performance with graduate students from the School of Architecture Intelligence Unit. In 2010-2011, the Limerick Clare Energy Agency in association with Limerick County Council appointed the University of Limerick to undertake an evaluation of the relationship between occupant comfort, energy use and and building fabric at Limerick County Hall. Through the research development, we developed a process of monitoring and analysis of human behaviour patterns as related to environmental conditions and associated energy use. As a result of this study, the research team were able to advise and assist with a reduction of energy consumption within the building by 50% over a two-year period, whilst tuning internal working environments to meet occupancy comfort needs.

In 2011-2012, a similar research study was undertaken at Westmeath County Hall and Portlaoise County Hall, again providing invaluable data and strategic improvement strategies to both Authorities to reduce energy consumption whilst making improvements to occupant comfort and experience.

These pilot research studies have been developed to the submission of an FP7 Research Proposal for Large Scale Energy Reduction in Buildings within the European market. The School of Architecture, University of Limerick is coordinating a team of 10 research partners from Finalnd, Germany, France and the UK.

I studied at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture in Aberdeen, graduating in 1994. I worked in private practise for six years in the UK before moving to Ireland in 1999, joining Bucholz McE­voy Architects to collaborate on several acclaimed projects including Limerick County Hall (2003), SAP Galway (completed 2004), the Environmental Research Instutute, UCC (2005), and Elmpark, Merrion Road, Dublin, a 100,000sqm neighbourhood quarter (2007).

In 2007, I established PAC Studio (www.pacstudio.ie) with co-director Peter Crowley. PAC Studio is an architectural practice focused on the integration of environmental intelligence within architectural and landscape design, particularly the relationships between the built environments we make and the impacts on human health and behaviour. Our work includes the Donore Road Health Campus, a neighbourhood and community-centred health facility incorporating medical practitioners, Primary Care Teams, mental health services and a range of assisted living and convalescent dwellings for the elderly and infirm.

I am a member of the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland since 2007 and the Royal Institute of British Architects/ Architects Registration Board in the United Kingdom since 1997.
